About

This blog presents our exploration around Anthroposophy, seeking to understand its core principles, its view of humanity and the cosmos, and its relevance to various aspects of life and history.

At the heart of our discussion lies Anthroposophy itself, which we define, based on Steiner’s work, as a spiritual science or path of knowledge (“wisdom of the human being”). Developed by Rudolf Steiner, it aims to bridge the modern scientific understanding of the physical world with a rigorous, conscious investigation of the spiritual realities underlying both the human being and the universe. It’s presented not as a religion based on faith, but as a path of knowledge accessible through the development of latent human faculties of perception. Steiner’s own philosophical foundation for this, particularly the role of intuitive thinking as a direct experience of spirit and the basis for human freedom, was highlighted in Rudolf Steiner – The Philosophy of Freedom.

A significant portion of our exploration centers on the Anthroposophical view of the human being. We explore Steiner’s description of our complex constitution, extending beyond the physical body to include supersensible members like the etheric (life) body, the astral (soul) body, and the spiritual core, the “I” or Ego. We touche upon the threefold functional organization into nerve-sense (thinking), rhythmic (feeling), and metabolic-limb (willing) systems, and the potential development of higher spiritual principles. The path towards understanding these inner realities was further illuminated by texts like “The Road to Self-Knowledge”

Flowing from this understanding of the human being is the concept of Karma and Reincarnation. We discuss how Anthroposophy views human life not as a single event, but as a series of earthly incarnations interspersed with periods of existence in the spiritual world. Karma is understood as the law of destiny, where our actions, thoughts, and feelings create consequences that shape future lives, providing opportunities for learning, development, and the balancing of past deeds. This perspective seeks to provide meaning to individual destiny and sheds light on the spiritual roots of health and illness.

Our conversation expands to the vast panorama of Cosmic and Human Evolution depicted by Steiner. We touch upon the great planetary stages (Old Saturn, Sun, Moon, Earth, and future Jupiter, Venus, Vulcan) and the progression of human consciousness through ancient epochs like Lemuria and Atlantis, leading into our current Post-Atlantean period with its distinct cultural phases. This evolutionary perspective includes not only humanity but also the Spiritual Worlds and Beings – the hierarchies (Angels, Archangels, etc.) guiding evolution and the elemental beings active in nature.

A major theme of specific interest, especially nowadays, is the role of the Adversarial Powers in this evolutionary drama. We delve into Steiner’s descriptions of Lucifer, the bestower of premature freedom, pride, and illusion; Ahriman (Mephistopheles), the spirit of materialism, error, cold intellect, and hardening; and the future challenge of the Asuras (linked by Steiner to Sorath, the Sun Demon, symbolized by 666 in the Apocalypse), who aim to sever the human “I” from its spiritual source through ultimate materialism and sensuality. We explore their origins, their influence on specific evolutionary epochs (Lucifer/Lemuria, Ahriman/Atlantis), their specific temptations, their methods of deception in modern life (e.g., through science, economics, nationalism), and their necessary, albeit challenging, role in provoking human freedom and conscious choice.

Counterbalancing these forces is the Christ Impulse. We discuss its paramount importance in Steiner’s worldview as the central event of Earth evolution. We explore the unique nature of the Christ Being (a cosmic Sun Spirit), the Incarnation through the Baptism, the meaning of the Mystery of Golgotha (death and Resurrection) as an act that infused the Earth’s spiritual sphere with new life forces, conquered death, and provided humanity the possibility of finding balance and true spiritual freedom. We touche upon Christ’s presence before Golgotha as perceived in the Mysteries and His ongoing work within the etheric realm of the Earth.

We examine how Anthroposophy offers a Path of Knowledge through inner development, involving meditation and specific exercises to awaken higher cognitive faculties (Imagination, Inspiration, Intuition), enabling direct perception of spiritual realities.

Our analysis also touches upon the practical applications stemming from these spiritual insights, briefly mentioning Waldorf education, biodynamic agriculture, anthroposophical medicine, Eurythmy, and other arts. We specifically notee the rich foundation Anthroposophy provides for understanding Child Development and its implications for education. Furthermore, we considered Anthroposophy’s approach to Natural Science (via Goethean methods, as in The Light Course) and its illumination of Spiritual History, interpreting myths (like those of Prometheus, Heracles, Oedipus, the Titans, and the Sphinx) and relating to historical spiritual movements like Mysticism. The spiritual nature of Language itself is also explored.

Finally, we address the challenges of bringing such work into the world, touching upon the difficulties Steiner faced due to misunderstanding and resistance from materialism and the issue of historical skepticism regarding Christ and the Gospels, viewed from the perspective of spiritual science which emphasizes spiritual reality and perception alongside, but not solely dependent upon, external historical evidence.

In summary, our conversation in this blog will go through the core tenets of Anthroposophy as presented by Rudolf Steiner across a wide range of his works. It reveals a path aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the human being as a spiritual entity evolving within a spiritually dynamic cosmos, facing challenges from adversarial forces, finding balance through the Christ impulse, and capable of attaining direct spiritual knowledge through conscious inner development, thereby bringing renewed meaning and purpose to both individual life and practical work in the world.
