The Divine Will and Human Freedom: Do the Spiritual Hierarchies Have Free Will?

The nine spiritual hierarchies, illustrating the ordered cosmos in which the question of free will is posed.

The concept of free will lies at the very heart of what it means to be human. It is the capacity to choose between good and evil, to act not from instinct or compulsion, but from a self-generated inner resolve. This freedom is the source of all human creativity, morality, and progress, but it is also the source of error, suffering, and evil. As we contemplate the great spiritual beings of the cosmos, the celestial hierarchies who weave the tapestry of existence, a natural and profound question arises: Is this freedom to choose, this capacity for error, a universal principle of all consciousness, or is it a uniquely human attribute? Do the spiritual hierarchies have free will?

This article will explore this deep question from the perspective of spiritual science. We will discover that “free will” in the human sense is not the common property of all beings, but is in fact the specific goal of our entire earthly evolution. We will explore the nature of the will of the divine hierarchies, seeing it as a state of perfect, conscious harmony with the cosmic plan. We will then examine how the exceptions to this rule—the adversary powers—came into being. And finally, we will see how humanity is destined to become a new, “Tenth Hierarchy,” whose unique contribution to the cosmos is precisely the creation of something that did not exist before: love that is born out of perfect freedom.

A Ladder of Consciousness: The Nine Hierarchies

The Ordered Ranks of the Cosmos

Before we can speak of the will of the spiritual hierarchies, we must first remind ourselves of the vast, ordered, and magnificent cosmos in which they live and work. Spiritual science reveals that the space between humanity and the ultimate Godhead is not an empty void, but a plenum of creative intelligence, organized into nine distinct ranks or hierarchies, which can be grouped into three great triads.

  • The First Triad, consisting of the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, lives in the most direct contemplation of the Divine. They are the great cosmic counselors, whose being is one with the primal intentions of the Godhead.
  • The Second Triad, consisting of the Kyriotetes (Spirits of Wisdom), Dynamis (Spirits of Motion), and Exousiai (Spirits of Form), are the great governors of the cosmos. They are the architects of our solar system, who translate the divine intentions into the laws and forms of planetary existence.
  • The Third Triad, consisting of the Archai (Spirits of Personality), Archangels (Spirits of Fire), and Angels (Sons of Life), are the administrators of this cosmic plan, the beings most directly concerned with the evolution of the Earth and of humanity.

This is not a rigid chain of command, but a living, interwoven symphony of consciousness, a great ladder of being upon which all of creation unfolds. Where, in this magnificent order, does the principle of freedom and choice reside?

The Will of the Gods: Harmony with the Cosmic Plan

A Freedom of Action, Not from Action

For the overwhelming majority of these hierarchical beings, their individual will is in complete and perfect harmony with the universal divine will of the cosmos. They do not experience the inner struggle, the doubt, the temptation, and the choice between a “good” and an “evil” path that is the hallmark of the human condition. Their entire being is a conscious, loving, and joyful expression of the good.

Their freedom, therefore, is not a freedom in the human sense of choosing between different paths. It is a freedom of a higher kind: the freedom to perfectly and creatively execute the divine intention. It is a freedom of action, not a freedom from the great cosmic laws.

We can find a faint earthly analogy in the genius of a virtuoso musician. A great pianist is not “free” to play notes that violate the laws of harmony and the structure of the musical piece. Such a freedom would only result in chaos and ugliness. The pianist’s freedom lies in their perfect, living, and masterful ability to take the composer’s intention and bring it to life in a unique and beautiful way. Their will is so perfectly united with the will of the music that the two become one. Their mastery does not grant them the freedom to make a mistake, but the freedom from ever wanting to.

So it is with the will of the gods. Their consciousness is so vast, their wisdom so profound, and their being so filled with love, that their will flows in perfect unison with the great symphony of creation. They are the free and conscious co-creators of a plan whose goodness they perceive with absolute clarity.

The Exception to the Rule: The Origin of the Adversary Powers

The Beings Who Remained Behind

This state of harmonious willing was not, however, a static gift. It was the result of a long and sublime process of evolution that these hierarchies themselves underwent in the distant cosmic past. And in any great evolutionary process, it is possible for some beings to not complete a particular stage of development, to remain behind at an earlier level of consciousness. It is in this “lagging behind” that we find the origin of a different kind of will, a will that has separated itself from the primary divine plan. This is the origin of the adversary powers.

  • The Luciferic Beings: Spiritual science reveals that during the great evolutionary stage of Old Moon, a period long before the Earth existed, certain beings from the hierarchy of the Angels did not complete their intended transformation. They held back, preserving their own kind of wisdom and “light” from that earlier stage. As humanity began its own evolution on Earth, these Luciferic beings approached the human soul and sought to bestow upon it a premature form of this light—a dreamy, imaginative spirituality and a sense of “I-ness”—before humanity was ready for it. This was the spiritual reality behind the event described pictorially as the “temptation” in the Garden of Eden. Their action was a deviation from the progressive plan of the leading gods, an act of their own separated will.
  • The Ahrimanic Beings: Similarly, other beings fell away from the normal stream of evolution at even earlier stages, developing a will that is intensely focused on the material, the dense, and the lifeless. These Ahrimanic beings are the great tempters to materialism. Their will is set upon the goal of convincing humanity that the spiritual world does not exist, and of hardening the Earth into a purely mechanical, soulless state.

The existence of these adversary powers shows that the potential for a form of “free will”—the capacity to deviate from the intended evolutionary path—does indeed exist within the spiritual world. But it is the great exception, not the rule. It is this very deviation, this introduction of opposition and temptation into the cosmos, that creates the necessary conditions for the development of something entirely new: human freedom.

Humanity: The Tenth Hierarchy and the Creation of Love

The Hierarchy of Freedom and Love

The entire cosmic plan, with all its inherent dangers and the existence of these adversary powers, was orchestrated for a single, sublime purpose: the creation of a being who could be truly free. Spiritual science describes humanity as being destined to one day become the Tenth Hierarchy.

What is the unique spiritual substance that humanity is to contribute to the cosmos? The nine hierarchies above us already possess wisdom, power, life, and motion in their perfected forms. Their being is a radiant expression of a divine love that flows through them as a cosmic necessity. The one quality they do not possess is freedom in the human sense—the freedom that is forged in the crucible of doubt, error, and temptation. And therefore, the one thing they cannot create out of their own being is love that is born out of that freedom.

This is the unique and sacred mission of humanity. We have been placed on an Earth that is a battlefield between the forces of Light and Darkness, between Lucifer and Ahriman. We have been endowed with an “I,” a spark of the divine, but one that is at first weak and subject to error. We have been given the terrible freedom to choose against the good, to follow the path of egoism. This freedom to fall is the absolute and necessary precondition for the freedom to rise, the freedom to choose the good not out of divine compulsion, but out of one’s own deepest, freely-won insight and love.

The hierarchies above us are the hierarchies of necessity, of a love that is their very nature. Humanity is to become the Hierarchy of Freedom and Love. We are the beings who are to add to the cosmos a love that has been freely chosen in a world where it could have been rejected.

Christ: The Being Who Unites Divine Will and Human Freedom

This mission of humanity—to bridge the gap between divine necessity and earthly freedom—would be impossible if left to our own devices. The chasm between the perfect, harmonious will of the hierarchies and our own struggling, fallible will is too vast. A mediator was needed, a being who could partake of both worlds.

This mediator is the Christ Being. As a sublime divine being from the highest spiritual realms, His will was in perfect, conscious unity with the entire cosmic plan. By incarnating in the human being Jesus of Nazareth, He subjected this divine will to all the limitations, pains, and frailties of a human existence. He walked the Earth not as a god compelling obedience, but as a human being freely choosing His path at every moment. This journey culminated in the Mystery of Golgotha, where His divine will freely accepted the ultimate state of unfreedom—death on the Cross.

Through this deed, the Christ Impulse was planted into the very heart of the Earth’s evolution. It is now a spiritual force that is available to every individual human “I.” It is an impulse that does not override our freedom, that does not compel us to be good. Rather, it is a spiritual strengthening of our own “I,” a light that allows us to see the good more clearly and a warmth that gives us the strength to freely choose it. The Christ is the great divine being who makes it possible for human freedom to find its way back to the divine will, not out of necessity, but out of love.

Conclusion

So, do the spiritual hierarchies have free will? The answer is a profound and nuanced one. No, they do not possess free will in the human sense, the freedom to choose between good and evil, the freedom to err. Their being is so suffused with wisdom and love that their will flows in perfect, conscious harmony with the great divine plan of the cosmos. Theirs is the sublime freedom of the master, not the struggling freedom of the pupil.

And yet, the potential to deviate from this plan existed, and it was this deviation that gave rise to the adversary powers of Lucifer and Ahriman. It was their very existence that created the cosmic stage of trial and opposition. And it is upon this stage that humanity has been placed to perform its sacred and unique mission: to develop true free will, and out of that freedom, to create a new kind of love. We are to become the Tenth Hierarchy, the Hierarchy of Freedom and Love, the beings who freely give back to the Godhead the love that the gods first bestowed upon us as a gift. The will of the gods is the great, harmonious music of the spheres. Human freedom is the silence into which that music can be received, and then, out of our own innermost being, played back, not as a mere echo, but as a new and freely created song.
