Every autumn, as the light visibly withdraws, a festival occurs that Rudolf Steiner regarded as among the most spiritually urgent of the entire year. Michaelmas — traditionally observed on 29 September — commemorates the Archangel Michael, a being Steiner describes as a genuine cosmic intelligence whose specific mission bears directly on the deepest spiritual struggles of the modern age.
Steiner addresses Michael in GA 26 (“Anthroposophical Leading Thoughts”), GA 152 (“Approaching the Mystery of Golgotha”), and GA 194 (“The Mission of the Archangel Michael”). For Steiner, Michaelmas is a genuine cosmic event recurring each year with real spiritual force, offering humanity a specific, time-limited opportunity to align with one of the most significant spiritual currents at work in the present epoch.
Who Michael Actually Is
Steiner describes Michael as an Archangel of extraordinary rank — a being who has repeatedly served as the “Angel of the Countenance,” carrying and making visible the highest spiritual intelligence governing a given stage of Earth’s development. In the present age, this means the intelligence and will of the Christ being himself.
The Archangels take turns governing successive historical periods, each bringing a specific spiritual impulse. Michael served once before, in the centuries leading up to the founding of Christianity. Steiner indicates that Michael’s regency resumed in 1879 — connected with a specific spiritual event: the defeat of Ahriman’s forces in the spiritual world and the casting down of what Steiner, drawing on the Book of Revelation, describes as the dragon. This event marks the beginning of the present Michaelic age.
Michael’s Cosmic Mission
Steiner describes Michael as the guardian of cosmic intelligence — the vast body of genuine spiritual wisdom concerning the cosmos and the hierarchies that was, in earlier epochs, directly perceived through ancient clairvoyant consciousness. As human consciousness developed toward the intellectual, individually reasoning mode of the present epoch, this cosmic intelligence withdrew from direct perception. It did not disappear — it became Michael’s specific charge, held in the spiritual world awaiting the moment humanity could receive it again through a new, fully conscious mode of perception.
Michael’s mission is therefore to help humanity develop the capacity to receive cosmic intelligence consciously — thinking about the spiritual world with the same rigour that modern intellectual culture applies to the physical world. Michael does not want passive belief. He wants genuine, freely developed spiritual thinking.
Furthermore, Steiner describes in GA 177 (“The Fall of the Spirits of Darkness”) how the dragon Michael defeated represents the combined forces of Ahrimanic materialism and Luciferic illusion. His victory, placed in the final decades of the nineteenth century, was decisive but not final — the dragon was cast toward the Earth rather than eliminated, meaning its influence became more concentrated within earthly civilisation and the individual soul. This is why the Michaelic age brings both extraordinary opportunity and extraordinary danger simultaneously.
Michaelic Thinking and Courage
Steiner describes Michaelic thinking as a third mode between the old instinctive clairvoyance and the cold, materialistic intellectuality of modern culture — thinking with the full clarity and rigour of modern intellectual development, turned toward genuine spiritual reality rather than confined to purely physical concerns. Every act of genuine, individually verified spiritual thinking is, in this sense, a Michaelic act.
Furthermore, Steiner connects Michael specifically with genuine courage — the strength to think independently and to act on what has been genuinely verified rather than what convention simply asserts. This is why Michaelmas, in the agricultural calendar, was traditionally associated with the inner strength needed to face the coming winter: an inner light must be kindled precisely because the outer light is withdrawing.
Iron and the Time-Limited Opportunity
Steiner connects Michael’s sword with the metal iron and the Mars forces of decisive, courageous will. The traditional Michaelmas practices — working with iron, stories of dragon-slaying, physically demanding activities — are designed to cultivate a lived, embodied experience of Michaelic virtues rather than leaving them as abstract concepts.
Steiner indicates that the opportunity Michael’s regency offers is not permanently available. This connects directly with his account of the coming incarnation of Ahriman: the Michaelic opportunity for conscious spiritual thinking and the Ahrimanic danger of complete materialism are directly opposed developments proceeding simultaneously in the present age — and which one a given soul aligns with is a genuine, consequential choice made continuously through the quality of thinking each person cultivates.
