The Prophet Ezekiel and the Vision of the Chariot: Rudolf Steiner on the Most Mysterious Book of the Bible

Ezekiel's vision of the chariot — Rudolf Steiner identifies the four living creatures as genuine supersensible perceptions of the cherubim and the fourfold cosmic human archetype

The Book of Ezekiel opens with one of the strangest passages in all of world literature. A Hebrew priest, exiled in Babylon, sees the heavens open. Out of a storm of fire comes a vision of four living creatures — each with four faces and four wings — accompanied by wheels within wheels, a crystalline firmament, a sapphire throne, and a figure of blazing light enthroned above everything. This vision — known in Jewish mystical tradition as the Merkabah, the Chariot — has haunted interpreters for two and a half thousand years.

Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual science approaches this vision with precision and depth. He addresses Ezekiel in GA 122 (“Genesis: Secrets of the Biblical Story of Creation”) and GA 148 (“The Fifth Gospel”). For Steiner, Ezekiel’s vision is not a dream or a literary construction. It is a genuine supersensible perception — a real encounter with spiritual realities of the highest order — whose content corresponds with remarkable precision to what spiritual science independently reveals about the celestial hierarchies.

Ezekiel as Genuine Initiate

Steiner treats Ezekiel as a genuine initiate — a human being who had developed specific spiritual faculties through the Hebrew priestly tradition and was therefore capable of receiving genuine supersensible perceptions. Consequently, what Ezekiel saw was not symbolic imagery arising from religious imagination. It was a real perception of a real spiritual world — perceived through the specific mode of consciousness formed by his priestly training.

Furthermore, Steiner describes in GA 122 how the Hebrew prophetic tradition carried a specific mission within the overall development of humanity. The Hebrews were the people most specifically prepared for the reception and transmission of the Christ impulse. The Babylonian exile — catastrophic in outer terms — served a specific spiritual purpose. The confrontation between Hebrew spiritual consciousness and the advanced Babylonian mystery wisdom produced a specific deepening. It was within this crisis that Ezekiel received his vision.

The Four Living Creatures

The four living creatures — each with the face of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle — are the most striking element of Ezekiel’s vision. Steiner addresses their significance in GA 230 (“Man as Symphony of the Creative Word”) and GA 104 (“The Apocalypse of St John”).

These four beings are genuine supersensible realities — real spiritual beings at a specific level of the cosmic hierarchy. Steiner identifies them with the four cherubim — beings of the second-highest hierarchical order whose specific function is to mediate between the highest divine realities and the lower hierarchical orders. Furthermore, the four faces they carry — man, lion, ox, and eagle — are the same four cosmic soul forces Steiner describes throughout his work: thinking, feeling, willing, and the integrating “I.”

Steiner connects these four creatures with the four fixed signs of the zodiac — Aquarius, Leo, Taurus, and Scorpio — and with the four evangelists — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The vision of Ezekiel, the four sacred animals of world mythology, the four Gospels, and the four zodiacal signs are all expressions of the same cosmic reality perceived from different angles of spiritual vision.

The Wheels and the Throne

The wheels accompanying each creature — their rims full of eyes, moving without turning in any direction — represent the cosmic laws governing the movement of hierarchical beings. They are full of eyes because these laws are not blind mechanical forces but living, spiritually aware realities — the cosmos seeing itself through the regularities of its own activity.

Above the creatures, a crystalline firmament separates the lower from the higher. The crystal represents a substance that has been fully spiritualised — carrying the spiritual intelligence that shaped it in a fully transparent and fully ordered form. Above this firmament, a sapphire throne bears a figure of blazing light surrounded by a rainbow. This is the closest approach to the divine ground that a human being bearing physical consciousness could sustain. Ezekiel falls on his face in awe.

The Vision as Preparation for Christ

Steiner’s most profound observation about Ezekiel concerns its relationship to the Christ event. He indicates in GA 148 that Ezekiel’s perception of the four living creatures — the fourfold cosmic human archetype in its highest hierarchical expression — was a specific spiritual preparation for the Incarnation.

The four cherubim bearing the cosmic human archetype represent the hierarchical forces preparing the cosmic conditions for the descent of the Christ being into a physical human body. The vision that Ezekiel received was a genuine preview — a glimpse, granted to a prepared human consciousness, of the cosmic background of the central event of Earth evolution.

Furthermore, the vision appeared in Babylon — in the heart of the culture carrying the most advanced astronomical and mystery wisdom of the ancient world. Different streams of ancient spiritual wisdom were converging in that historical moment, preparing the conditions in which the Christ impulse could eventually enter Earth evolution.

The Vision That Never Ends

Ezekiel’s vision continues to draw serious seekers because it carries within it something that genuine supersensible perception always carries — a living quality of encounter with real spiritual realities that does not fade with time. Steiner’s spiritual science does not reduce this vision to symbol or metaphor. It confirms it as what it is: a genuine encounter with genuine spiritual realities — the same realities that Steiner’s own investigation reveals — transmitted across millennia with a fidelity that testifies to the genuine spiritual power from which it originally came.
